Newspapers

Revised 8/2010 SR

MeL has newspapers in several places.

1. Gale InfoTrac Newsstand has approximately 1000 newspapers from across the U.S. and around the world. Users can search on the already familiar PowerSearch platform. News results are also pulled and displayed in many of the searches, as we have seen with the News tabs.

Having international newspapers available to Michigan residents offers a great opportunity to gain insight into the different views that are reported in different countries and regions.

Have the class go to mel.org. Next, have the class click on INFOTRAC NEWSSTAND and go to ADVANCED SEARCH. Type Venezuela in the first box, type baseball in the second box, and type Hong Kong in the third box. Leave all the defaults set at keyword. Do the search and allow the class to look at the results list. There are papers from all over the world reporting on a shooting incident at a baseball game.

Second search to pull up results from multicultural perspective: ???

2. MeL also has NewsBank Michigan Newspapers. Users select this from the alphabetical list on mel.org. They can search both papers (Detroit News, Grand Rapids Press) together or each can be search separately.

PLEASE NOTE: In 2009, NewsBank lost the rights to the Lansing State Journal.

Have the class click on NEWSBANK MICHIGAN NEWSPAPERS in the alphabetical list, then click on MICHIGAN at the bottom of the short list of links. We don’t have time to do much with this, but we want users to know that it is there for them to use. NewsBank Michigan Newspapers also includes some magazines for searching, and these have a lot of overlap with other MeL databases.
