Health and Wellness Resource Center
Reviewed 7/09 SR
We teach Health and Wellness Resource Center (HWRC) in much greater depth in our Health class, so this will just be a chance to remind library staff how important it is for young adults to have access to RELIABLE health information and to show some of the main features of the database. If people have more questions, you can suggest they schedule the Health class, or you can direct them to the wiki script for that class (see note below).
Have them open HWRC from the databases list. Point out the tabs across the top. These will take users to basic sections of HWRC. There are also six large "boxes" on the page. One is for searching for a specific disease (same as the tab above), one is the basic search box, one is for locating drug or herb information (same as the tab above), one is a news box, one has directory information (same as tab above), and one has health highlights.
It is my opinion that most users will find it easier to choose a tab, depending on what type of question they need to answer.
The sections of HWRC that will probably be of most use to young adults will be the section on diseases (for curriculum support), the Trusted Sites (for reliable Internet sites), and the Health Assessment. Ask the class to click on DISEASES & CONDITIONS to see how the list is organized. Next ask them to click on TRUSTED SITES and review the sites that are included. Finally, have them click on HEALTH ASSESSMENT to see what is there.
Remind them that this is just meant to be a very quick introduction to the database and that we go into more detail in the Health class.
Do the exercises.
