Part 1: finding websites


Using the Gateway for Health and Wellness find:


1. websites related to arthritis.


2. a website that would offer medical information in a foreign language.


3. a website that gives you the warning signals of a heart attack.

1. Find a dictionary definition of the word morbidity.


2. Find an encyclopedia article on hantavirus.


3. Find some information on some potential side effects of the drug lidocaine viscous.


4. List the title of one current news item on MedLine Plus.



Part 2: Health and Wellness Resource Center


Basic Search


1. Using the “search” box, find full-text journal articles on kidney stones. Bring up one of the articles and email it to yourself.



Drug Finder


2. Use the Drugs and Herbal Remedies tab to locate information about Tylenol (acetaminophen).


Encyclopedia


3. Click on the Diseases and Conditions tab to find a medical encyclopedia article about meningitis.


Dictionary


4. If a word ends with algia, what does it mean?


Directory


6. I like to keep my charitable donations within our own state. Since a friend recently passed away due to severe diabetic complications, I want to support research to find a cure for diabetes. What is the address of a good organization in Michigan to receive my donation?



Part 3: Health Reference Center Academic


1. Using Advanced Search, search for keyword = blood clot AND keyword = travel. Limit your search to items from within the last two years. (hint, drop down menus).


Extra: Once you have a list of results, look at what is behind the Magazines tab. Try sorting those results by relevance and see how the list changes.


2. Go to Subject Guide Search. Search for Epstein-Barr Virus. Select any subdivision of interest to you, find an article, and email it to yourself.


3. Using Basic Keyword Search, find a podcast on mosquitoes. (Don’t take time in class to open the link and to listen). Translate the text into a language of your choice.



Part 4: CINAHL

1. Using the Basic Search screen, do a search on a topic that relates to your own health. Do you find any full text articles?


If you only want full text results for your search, what would you need to do first?



2. Find a full text article on cystic fibrosis.



Part 5: NetLibrary health ebooks


1. Find an ebook about hypertension.


2. A patron would like information about careers in the health care field. Are there ebooks you can find for him/her?


3. Find a book on a health care topic of interest to you.
