ArchiveGrid
06/10 KRB
Start the demonstration by having the class find ARCHIVEGRID in the alphabetical list of databases at mel.org and open it.
ArchiveGrid is an OCLC database used in searching for historical documents, personal papers, and family histories held in archives throughout the world. It provides access to detailed archival collection descriptions and includes nearly a million descriptions of archival collections held by thousands of libraries, museums, historical societies, and archives worldwide.
1. Point out the search tips in the left column. Point out the partial list of contributors on the Home page. Explain that archives and libraries have to submit their information in order to be included in the database. There is also a link (the word "thousands") that will show all of the participants in a new window, but we do not need to do that in class.
2. Have the class type Edgar Allan Poe in the search box, located in the upper left corner of the screen, and click on the GO button.
3. Have them click on the title of the first record to see what information is provided, then click on the link for more information on how to access the material. Explain that researchers are "on their own" for contacting the archive or library. MeL does not do this for anyone.
4. Next, have the class type Mackinac Bridge and construction in the search box. Click on the GO button. Point out that many of the results come from the University of Michigan. As with the previous example, the results provide links for more information on how to access the materials.
Ask for questions. Have the class do the exercises.
This service is funded in part by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan. Additional project support comes from the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) via the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
