HarpWeek: The Harper's Weekly Database on the Web
HarpWeek is a text and image database of the historical publication 'Harper's Weekly', the 19th Century 'Journal of Civilization'. It provides a rich research source of 19th century events, people and culture, all available via the web.
Harper's Weekly is perhaps the most important primary resource for examining nineteenth century America on a cumulative week-to-week basis. HarpWeek's electronic database makes it possible for the user to discover the lively editorials, news stories, illustrations, cartoons, and even advertisements that shaped and reflected public opinion in this era. Pages have been scanned as facsimile images, then both thesaurus-based indexing (still in process) and searchable full-text (almost complete) have been created which integrate with those pages.
The W. K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded MLC a grant for $150,000 that will allow every two-year and four-year college or university in Michigan to have web access to HarpWeek, volumes 1857-1889. This grant generously covers the initial one-time purchase price for the volumes, as well as the maintenance fees through 2004. Beginning in 2005, libraries will be required to pay an annual maintenance fee for continued access. To register your library, please complete the registration form and fax it to Diana Mitchell at MLC.
HarpWeek segments currently available through MLC are:
- HarpWeek: The Civil War Era 1857-1865
- HarpWeek: Reconstruction I 1866-1871
- HarpWeek: Reconstruction II 1872-1877
