Michigans statewide delivery has a new name: RIDES!

MCLS is pleased to announce the new name of Michigan’s statewide delivery service! MeL Delivery will now be known as RIDES – Regional Interlibrary DElivery Service. This change provides a better identification of the services provided. Delivery service will continue to operate as before, and contacts will remain unchanged. The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) is looking for an organized, detail-oriented, customer-friendly person to work with electronic subscriptions. This individual will be responsible for ordering, renewing, and processing all member subscriptions for electronic resources. Activities include data entry, updating product information and price lists into a web-based portal, update department web pages, provide member support, and other related duties.

This position requires two - three years relevant experience, a good working knowledge of web-based applications, and the ability to organize project details effectively. A Bachelors Degree is required. Outstanding verbal/written communications skills are essential.

Salary is commensurate with experience, from $34,000. MCLS offers an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, life, and vision insurance. MCLS Announces New Dues Structure

Beginning July 1, 2011, MCLS is implementing a new uniform dues structure that will cover member libraries in Indiana and Michigan.

After the merger in February, 2010, Indiana libraries were assessed dues based on INCOLSA’s former dues structure and Michigan libraries were assessed on MLC’s former dues structure. These dues covered memberships running through June 30, 2011. The MCLS Interim Board recognized the need to create a new dues structure that would be uniform across the two states and adopted the following for implementation in FY2012 (July2011-June2012).

The new membership fee structure has four categories:
Category 1 (4-yr academic and large publics*) - $250 annual membership dues
Category 2 (2-yr academic and medical) - $175 annual membership dues
Category 3 (medium/small publics, K12, special) - $125 annual membership dues
Category 4 (cooperatives and other consortia**) - $125 annual membership dues.

*Large public libraries are defined as those serving 40,000 and above.

**Category 4 is for cooperatives and consortia joining as individual organizations and does not extend MCLS membership or services to their member libraries.

MCLS Annual Membership Meeting Held on Oct. 1.

On October 1, 2010, MCLS held its first annual membership meeting as a newly-merged organization. 88 Member Representatives attended by conference phone, 28 attended in person at the Indianapolis office, and 16 attended in person at the Lansing office.

There were two agenda issues requiring a membership vote, both of which were approved by the Member Representatives voting at the meeting:
(1) approval of the Bylaws, and
(2) approval of the slate of candidates for the 2011 MCLS Board of Directors.

MCLS would like to thank Nancy McGriff and the entire Interim Board for their hard work during our initial year after the merger. They have set an excellent foundation for the incoming 2011 MCLS Board.

Next year’s annual membership meeting will be held at LCC West in Lansing, Michigan, on Thursday, October 6, 2011. Streaming video will be available for remote attendees. In 2012, the annual membership meeting will be held in Indianapolis.

2010 Annual Meeting

The agenda has been set for the 2010 Annual Meeting. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and members may participate via conference call. Pre-registration is required, and pre-registered Member Representatives will receive call-in information via email. Note: members may opt instead to attend in person at either the MCLS Indianapolis office, 6202 Morenci Trail, Indianapolis, IN 46268, or at the MCLS Lansing office, 1407 Rensen Street, Lansing, MI 48910.

The Member Representatives for each MCLS member library should have received a mailing explaining the proposed changes and the voting process, including instructions for registering for the meeting. Member Representatives or designated Alternates will be able to attend the meeting via conference call or in person at the Indianapolis or Lansing building. Our quorum requirement for the meeting is ten percent of the membership, 108 members. Please note that only Member Representatives or designated Alternates may vote at the meeting.

Bylaws Background

The Memorandum of Understanding that was approved by the INCOLSA and MLC memberships in December 2009 specified that MLC’s bylaws would govern the new organization until the new board could review them and recommend changes. At the March board meeting, a task force was formed to review the bylaws and recommend changes. Victor Liu, library director at Washtenaw Community College, chaired the task force. He was joined by Pam Christensen, director at Peter White District Library, and Amy Harshbarger, librarian at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. They reported back to the board at the May meeting with a revised document. The board voted to put the revised bylaws before the membership at the Annual Meeting.

Oct 28 Deadline for RDA Toolkit Group Purchase

The Missouri Library Network Corporation (MLNC) is extending its consortium discount to MCLS member libraries in Indiana and Michigan. Member libraries wishing to take advantage of this offer must complete and return the order form to Missouri Library Network Corporation no later than October 28, 2010.

RDA will be replacing AACR2 cataloging rules and "is the new standard for resource description and access designed for the digital world." This offer will be open in October 2010 and again in early 2011. ((The discount MLNC can offer is based on the number of subscriptions received. If 20 or more libraries subscribe, the discount will be 10%. If 19 or fewer subscribe, the discount will be 5%. MLNC is making this offer available to member libraries in many states and expects to reach the 20 subscription level. Relais resource-sharing products now available to MCLS member libraries

MCLS is pleased to announce that we are now offering Relais International’s suite of resource-sharing services to our membership.

Relais International’s products and services provide systems and software solutions to automate and streamline libraries’ interlibrary loan and document delivery services. The suite of services includes Relais ILL, Relais D2D, and Relais Express.

MCLS Unveils New MeL Databases Training Program

On July 12, 2010, MCLS received approval to replace the MeL Databases workshop program with a new training model. The new model, which is being phased in this fall with full implementation starting in January 2011, includes three components:
1. Instructor-led online training.
2. PowerPoint presentations for use at in-services and similar group meetings.
3. Web page with links to online tutorials, training materials, exercises, and handouts.

We have scheduled ten instructor-led online workshops to be taught by our MeL trainers via WebEx:
